Academic Cheating
Academic
cheating is anything you do to make it appear that someone else's work is your
own and submit it. It is also known as
plagiarism. It can include sharing another's
work, copying answers on an exam or homework assignment, buying a research or
creative paper, paying someone else to do your work for you, obtaining copies
of exams, homework assignments, and notes and using them in place of doing your
own work, etc. Combining other people’s words in unique way and studying
someone work and give some changes is creative, but it is still cheating
because components of your construction are not your own without citing the
original contributions or gaining their previous approval to use their work. When
grades become the focus rather than education, students are ready to do
whatever it takes to get an ‘A’. Although some acts of cheating are
unintentional, the student doesn't realize what he/she is doing is considered
cheating, most of the time students know when they are doing something wrong.
Is it wrong to hand in someone else’s work as your own assignment?
Of course it is. Why don't we study and
practice skills that may be needed in your future careers instead of using someone else’s
work? We all know that academic cheating was wrong, But when we are going to
face with the decision of whether or not we should cheat firstly we go through
the situation and do that what we seems best for us at that movement. Students are depend on cheating for their
personal benefit, they aren’t learning anything themselves. Immanuel kant would
say, “Lying is a form of manipulation, a way of using someone as a tool.” It
was wrong to lie under any circumstances. What will happen when everyone cheats
in this way? The answer would be that no one could trust anyone. It’s raised
the question to our integrity and performance in general.
Here, Lucky did just that. Lucky
was in his last semester of college. Tomorrow was the last deadline to submit
his assignment. He was having trouble to finishing his assignment. He knew that
if he didn’t hand or submit it on time, he would be fail the course and not be
able to graduate that semester. He requested to his best friend sadiksha to
write the answer of his own. And lucky handed sadiksha’s work as his owns. He
passed the course, graduated and went to teach English in the public school. However, when lucky decided to submit
someone else’s work as his own, he was wrong. What
would he feel if one of his students handed him someone else’s work, like he
did with faculty who are evaluating your work i.e. Professor?
Why
do students take such easy way out even they know that, it was wrong? This
question was raised; they hurt themselves who engage in academic cheating.
It
hurt lucky too. By using sadiksha’s answer, lucky did not learned, weather he
could have answered that question or not? He deny himself that the opportunity
to learn and practice skills that may be needed in his future careers. He
never had the satisfaction of receiving a grade based on his own work.
Moreover, he will always look back on this case with shame and regret because
he missed the opportunity to receive honest feedback on how to improve his
skills and performance. So using friends work as own is totally wrong.
Overall,
the only thing that should concern us is our creativity and our knowledge. Though
it is easy to argue that this is sometimes right to get idea from various
sources and be inspired with the already given lines, but it was wrong for us
to lying professor and manipulates us into grading by submitting others answer.
And as far as possible use our own mind to get
the knowledge and idea for our assignment rather than submitting someone else's work is your own. At the end of
the day, Academic cheating trained, distorted our honesty and integrity. Stay
away from it.
